Nigella Health is committed to ensuring that our website and services are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We believe that all patients and visitors deserve equal access to health information and care.
1. Our Commitment
Nigella Health is committed to accessibility in accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and its Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (O. Reg. 191/11). We strive to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to our services in a manner that respects their dignity and independence.
We aim to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, as referenced in the AODA's Information and Communication Standards.
2. Current Accessibility Features
This website has been designed and developed with the following accessibility features:
Keyboard Navigation
- All interactive elements are reachable and operable via keyboard alone
- A visible focus indicator is provided for keyboard users
- A "Skip to main content" link appears at the top of each page to allow keyboard users to bypass repeated navigation
Screen Reader Support
- Semantic HTML5 elements are used throughout (landmarks:
header,nav,main,footer) - All images include meaningful
alttext; decorative images are markedaria-hidden="true" - Form inputs are associated with visible labels
- ARIA roles, states, and properties are used where native HTML semantics are insufficient
- The mobile navigation drawer uses
aria-expanded,aria-controls, andinertto convey state to assistive technologies
Colour and Contrast
- Text and interactive element colour contrast ratios meet or exceed the WCAG 2.1 Level AA minimum of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text
- Colour alone is never used as the sole means of conveying information
- A dark mode variant is provided, responsive to the user's operating system preference (
prefers-color-scheme: dark)
Motion and Animation
- Animations and transitions are suppressed for users who have enabled the "Reduce Motion" setting in their operating system (
prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)
Typography and Readability
- Text is sized in relative units (
rem) and scales with the user's browser font size preferences - Sufficient line spacing and paragraph spacing is maintained throughout
- Language is declared in the
langattribute of the HTML element (lang="en-CA")
Responsive Design
- The website is fully responsive and functional on all screen sizes, from mobile phones to large desktop displays
- Content is accessible without horizontal scrolling at standard viewport widths
3. Known Limitations
While we strive for full accessibility, some areas may not yet meet all WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria. Known limitations include:
- Third-party booking and scheduling tools embedded or linked from this site may have their own accessibility constraints that are outside of our direct control. We actively encourage our service providers to maintain accessible platforms.
- Some older PDF documents linked from this site may not be fully accessible. If you require a document in an accessible format, please contact us and we will provide an alternative.
We are actively working to address all known issues and continually improve the accessibility of this website.
4. Multi-Year Accessibility Plan
As required under the AODA, Nigella Health maintains an ongoing commitment to accessibility improvement. Our current priorities include:
- Annual accessibility reviews of this website against WCAG 2.1 Level AA
- Ensuring all new content added to the website meets accessibility standards at the time of publication
- Reviewing and updating this Accessibility Statement annually or whenever significant changes are made to the site
- Assessing and improving the accessibility of third-party tools used in our practice
5. Accessible Customer Service
We are committed to providing accessible customer service in accordance with the AODA's Customer Service Standard. This means we will:
- Communicate with patients in a manner that takes their disability into account
- Welcome the use of assistive devices in accessing our services
- Welcome the presence of support persons
- Provide documentation and health information in alternative formats upon request
- Accept feedback about the accessibility of our services and respond promptly
